British Red Cross - A Case Study on DR 
The British Red Cross may be well recognised for humanitarian relief throughout recent history.  Some would say disasters and the Red Cross symbol are synonymous.  But what if the providers of relief had their own disaster?  In an organisation which cannot afford to let anyone down yet is funded as a charity its systems must keep going in all circumstances.  This is a daily challenge and has been tested recently by global events such as the 2004 Tsunami response as well local disruptions such as the London 7/7 bombings.  In an organisation that relies on technology to communicate IT disaster recovery is an essential facet and there are more than a few lessons that would benefit any commercial corporation or public sector organisation.

How robust is the financial services industry and how do you meet the market regulations?
Stress and scenario testing should form a key part of a suite of tools used by a firm’s senior management in making integrated business strategy, risk management and capital planning decisions. Recent market events have shown the importance of strong governance in firms. Senior management at less affected firms have more successfully established comprehensive firm-wide risk assessment processes in which thoughtful stress and scenario testing played a material part, allowing better-informed and more timely decision-making. However, for many firms stress and scenario testing is not as robust, nor as embedded in senior management decision-making. Richard Maddison will talk about the UK financial services, market wide testing plus and give an early ?heads up? on the outcomes from the November industry wide testing presenting a preview of the results ahead of the March 2010 publication.

TV, call centre, web plus warehousing means QVC have one of the most complex IT DR challenges in the UK, Bernie will share QVC?s unique situation and explore the truism: There is no point in having a plan unless it is rehearsed. The same goes for an ITDR contract. If it is not tested there is no evidence it will work. More importantly, people have to know what to do. Everyone simply must be familiar with their part in the plan. This year QVC has broadcast 24 hours a day, our call centre has taken millions of orders and our distribution systems have provided quality, value and convenience to its customers. In any dynamic and complex business, risk management, resilience, contingency plans and the capability to keep going is vital. But the key ingredients are rehearsals and testing to inspire confidence that it actually works. In 2009 QVC will share its experiences of rehearsals in Battersea and Knowsley.
